Sauna Wood Types

Canadian Hemlock
Canadian Hemlock is a great wood for saunas, because of its resonable price, it is probably one of the most widly used wood types for saunas. Hemlock has an even tone and apperance, it is very constant in its colour, and does not vary, it is often used in the manufacturing of Saunas because of its beauty. It is a strurdy wood and not prone to warping, splitting or twisting.
Hemlock Wood is very durable and has no knotts in the wood, making it very beautiful. This wood has low allergen qualities. All these factors add up to Hemlock being one of the most trusted types of Wood for Saunas.

Rustic Cedar
Rustic Cedar has bigger knots than the cedar that is used on the indoor cedar saunas, indoor cedar saunas have virtually no knots at all. Rustic Cedar is very strong and used widely in the building industry, Outback Saunas use Rustic Cedar in their outdoor range, it is also a thicker grade than the FIR, Russian indoor cedar and Hemlock saunas.

Canadian Cedar
Canadian Cedar is by the Far the most beautiful wood used in saunas. The main issue with Cedar is the price, it is very expensive to buy and it is also more difficult to manufacture, mostly because of its uneven colour, with each plank being slightly different to the next. While colour variations add to the beauty of cedar, it does add time to the manufacturing process. Finishing the saunas is not as simple with cedar, as tidying up any small blemishes would require fine detail to colour matching.
Cedar has unquestionable durability, even the tree its self can last up to 1,000 years. Cedar does not rot and can last a life time. Builders still build homes out of Cedar today.
This wood is absolutely beautiful and has a lovely aroma, that increases as the sauna heats up. Some people buy these saunas just for the smell.

FIR Wood and Russian Spruce
Fir is a type of wood from the Cyprus family. This is a very durable wood and when it comes to strength, it is stronger than all the other woods used in saunas. Strength and durability are the reasons this is used on outdoor saunas. This is one of the most resilient soft woods available. Fir wood, just like Cyprus has many knots that add to the beauty (unlike pine with the bigger knots, FIR and Russian Spruce have very small knots) If we cannot source FIR wood, we use Russian Spruce, it is hard to tell the difference.
The aroma is beautiful in this sauna, probably the nicest smelling out of all the woods
